The 2012 Xisto is an old vines field blend, mostly Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, aged for 20 months in French oak. What do you get by upgrading from the regular Tinto? Perhaps not enough, considering the substantial price uptick, but I did like this better. It drank particularly well the next day. It may also prove to be more age-worthy than the regular Tinto. It had another layer of concentration, but a bit more oak impact. It is nonetheless loaded with charm, grace and freshness, not to mention that bit of oak. Not as big as its predecessor, the brilliant 2011, this more understated 2012 wins points for its lively demeanor and its delicious, lifted fruit. It finishes with that fine intensity of flavor and it is seductive the next day. It may not be quite as concentrated as some other vintages, but you’ll want another glass. This bright and sunny red could use a bit more cellar time to settle down and pull in some oak. Note: this is set for release in the USA at the end of 2015.

Dark fruit with vanilla overlay. Chewy and dense and flattering. Deep fruited and velvet-like texture. Starts sweet and finishes dry. Great depth, just enough freshenss. Drink 2015-2020

“The 2011 Xisto was probably the biggest star of the winery’s retrospective this issue. Coming in at 15% alcohol, it holds everything together well. Simply gorgeous, it is ripe, but tightly wound and beautifully balanced. Complexity will come in time, but this also shows intensity on the finish and it very much needs some more time in the cellar. It should come together well. Mostly about its potential just now, it will be interesting to see how this evolves with time.”

The 2012 Tinto, the last in the vertical, is a blend of 60% Touriga Nacional, 15% Touriga Franca and 25% Tinta Roriz, aged for 16-18 months in a mixture of new and second use barrels (70%-30%). It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. It is a bright and friendly young wine with lifted fruit and some tannic pop on the finish. Unevolved, it still benefits in some respects from its youth and it seems most similar to the 2008 in this lineup. The tannins at the moment do overwhelm the fruit a little, so it has some room to improve. There is a bright future ahead, as it came around well with 90 minutes of air. It seemed far more interesting and far more classy at that point. On the plus side, like most wines in this vintage, it is simply delicious, with waves of fresh fruit dribbling over the palate. It’s not the most concentrated in the group, but I rather liked it a lot at the moment for its finesse, structure and flavor. After a dull start, it became rather impressive. It is a nice value. It is going to be a perfectly nice food wine, too, with plenty of charm. Give it another year or two of cellaring, if you can.

Fragrant, intense, spicy, floral dark fruit. Deep, dark and savoury on the palate. Douro core. Power and refinement. Plenty of grip but no aggression. Long. Drink 2016-2025

The 2011 Tinto is gorgeously balanced and one of the best regular Tintos in the vertical this issue. I’m not quite certain it will surpass the beautiful and more lush 2007, but it probably will when it opens up. It seems better balanced and structured, if nowhere near as interesting and as expressive just now. Ending with a feeling of subtle concentration, it is youthful, vibrant and unevolved. As nice as the structure is, don’t forget that it is still delicious. Give this fresh and rather powerful Tinto a year or two more in the cellar, if you can. It is a very nice value, with upside potential.
